Nat Paton (b. 1970, Brisbane) holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) from Griffith University (1997). Her practice mainly consists of photographic self-portraiture focused on issues surrounding portrayal of the female form, often with an emphasis on associations with size. With strong performative qualities, her portraiture aims to humorously and unapologetically reclaim power over female physicality using the intrinsically seductive medium of photography.
Paton began exhibiting in 1993 and has worked on various scales from the photographic print to the billboard and in formats ranging from installation to performance. Highlights include her first prize appearance as Priscilla Presley in a look-a-like competition at Elvis Week, Southbank, Brisbane and performing as a Snow White domiNATrix at the Matt Lucas/Kevin McGee wedding reception at Whitehall Palace, London.
An honours graduate of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University (1997), her work has been exhibited locally and in numerous Australian and international group exhibitions. Support from Griffith University, Arts QLD and the Australia Council for the Arts has been integral to development of her art practice both locally and internationally. Paton is grateful for visionary businesses who have all listened to a wacky artistic idea and had the courage to help an artist make it happen.
Behind the scenes Paton has relied on a team of artisans that inspire her and share a creative vision. Photographic assistance over the years has mostly been provided by Gia Mitchell and Alison Warner. Film Directors have included Christopher Doolan, Dan James and Jeremy Hynes. Expert makeup artists have included Jaye Weir and Tiffany Beckwith-Skinner. Graphic design contribution from Mark McCarthy, Tania Lee and Kiki Katahanas.
Paton currently lives and works in Brisvegas with her 2 pugs Star and Jedda, keeping them in the style to which they have become accustomed.
